West Carrollton YMCA Indoor Pool

Great Miami Outfitters is offering two Recovery & Re-Entry courses to keep you paddling this winter!
Choose from the Recovery & Re-entry Basics Course OR the Advanced Course.

OPTION 1
Basics Course
Join Great Miami Outfitters for our first course in our Winter Paddling Progression – Recovery & Re-entry Basics.  This course is designed to give you the comfort and confidence if you capsize your kayak to empty the kayak of water and re-enter your kayak while in deep water.  Use this as an opportunity to develop your paddling skills during the winter months during this 2-hour course in an indoor, heated pool!

During this 2-hour session we will cover and practice these techniques and maneuvers helping you to become a more comfortable and confident paddler.
- Controlled wet exits without skirts
- Assisted Re-entry - T/X Re-entry
- Aided Re-entry - Heel Hooks with Slings
- Self Re-entry with Paddle float
- On water practice time!

OPTION 2
Advanced Course
You must have previously attended the Basic Course or equivalent in order to participate.
Build upon the skills you developed in Great Miami Outfitters’ Basic Recovery and Re-entry Course.  In the Advanced Bracing & Bow Rescues Course, we will focus on how to prevent yourself from capsizing using different strokes known as braces and how to use a bow rescue – a technique used to bring yourself upright without exiting your kayak by using another paddler’s kayak.  This is a skirted course – each participant will be taught how to safely and comfortably execute a controlled wet exit while wearing a neoprene spray skirt.

During this 2-hour course we will cover and practice these techniques and maneuvers helping you to become a more comfortable and confident paddler.
- Wet exits with skirts
- Bow Rescues
- Edging vs Leaning
- Low Braces
- High Braces
- On water practice time!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Are there any prerequisites for this course?
Not for Rescue & Re-entry Basics.  In order to maximize your on-water time, we ask that you complete the Basics Course (or equivalent) prior to joining us for the Bracing & Bow Rescues Course.
Will I learn to roll my kayak in these courses?
No, not in either the Rescue & Re-entry Basics Course or the Bracing & Bow Rescues Course.  However,  the skills learned in the Bracing & Bow Rescue Course will give you the foundations to begin learning to roll.  If you are interested in learning to roll your kayak, we highly suggest working through the Basics Course to the Bracing & Bow Rescue progression, then our Program Staff will schedule you for a roll session.  You can contact our Program Staff by calling the store at 937-938-5009 or email at adventure@greatmiamioutfitters.com.
Will I get wet?
Yes, please dress to get wet.
Are there changing rooms?
Yes, there are locker rooms. If you choose, you may bring your own lock to secure your items.
How long is the course?
The course is two hours of on-water instruction time.  Time is limited in the pool so we ask that each participant arrives by 4:00pm in order to maximize on-water time!
Do I need to wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) if I know how to swim?
Yes, each participant must wear a properly fitting PFD.
Do I need to wear a spray skirt?
Yes and no. The Rescue & Re-entry Basics Course will be taught without wearing spray skirts. The Bracing & Bow Rescues Course will be taught with neoprene spray skirts.
Do I need to bring my own equipment?
Yes and no. It is typically best to learn using your own equipment. However, we do offer the use of our instructional equipment for only $10 or $15. This includes a kayak, PFD, paddle, and optional neoprene spray skirt.
Can I use a sit-on-top kayak?
Not in either of these courses. Both courses are designed to teach you in a sit inside kayak. You can use all of your skills learned in this course and apply them to Sit On Top kayaks. If this applies to you please let us know and we will be more than happy to explain ways to take these skills and apply them to your Sit On Top Kayak.
What other items should I bring?
Participants typically enjoy using nose plugs for being in the water.  Also, a water shoe, change of clothes, towel, re-usable water bottle, and snacks. You will receive a Confirmation Email with full logistics and details for the course within one-week of registration.
