Recreational Kayaking Basics

During this hands-on class, you will be introduced to the basic skills and information needed to begin kayaking in a safe and enjoyable manner. Students will become acquainted with the necessary equipment and learn basic paddle strokes and concepts along with safety topics for beginners in recreational and touring kayaking. Enjoy a slide show and talk by Brent and Amy Anslinger of their 10-week, 1,300 mile walk around Ohio to celebrate the Ohio Bicentennial in 2003. From the corn fields to the small towns, from Lake Erie to the Ohio River, learn about the Buckeye Trail. This diverse trail now reaches into over 40 counties in Ohio, including Montgomery County and 5 different MetroParks. Find out about the struggles and joys of thru-hiking this unique trail, which is America’s 3rd-longest continuously marked hiking trail and is joined by the North Country National Scenic Trail and American Discovery Trail on their routes through Ohio.

The first annual event is now "water under the bridge." A big thank you to all of the race participants, as well as the cheering spectators. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed their paddle on our little scenic stretch of river.

Twin Valley Backpacking Trail is now open!
The trail includes over 22 miles of hiking through the beautiful Twin Valley of southwest Montgomery County connecting Germantown and Twin Creek MetroParks.
